Endurance Dog Races
Long distance dog races take place over a few days to over a week. The Kobuk 440 is a 440 mile dog race that takes place in Northwest Alaska during April.  The Kuskokwim 300 is a 300 mile dog race that takes place in January.  These races are both qualifying events for the Iditarod, which takes place in March.   The Iditarod is also know as the "Last Great Race on Earth" it covers 1000 miles of some of the roughest and most beautiful terrain in the world. The race consists of fierce mountains, frozen rivers, thick forests, and desolate tundras. Each team of 12–16 dogs must go from Anchorage all the way to Nome.

Katherine has completed the following races:

Triathlon Racing
There are hundreds of triathlon races and most of them consist of some length of swimming, biking, then running.  Some variations of this traditional format exist such as canoeing in place of swimming.  The races are characterized by the distances involved.  The shortest events are considered sprints.  A full Ironman starts off with a 2.4 mile swim, followed by a 112 mile bike, finishing off with 26.4 miles of running-a full marathon.  All of this takes place starting at 7:00 in the morning with all 1,000 plus athletes, in the water until the gun goes off.  The finishers will finish anywhere between 8.5 hours to 17 hours hours at which point the course is closed.  Whether an athlete finishes 1st for last-all end up with a feeling of accomplishment that is hard earned and deserved.

Katherine focuses all her training, year round, on Ironman distance events.  She started off with a fun sprinting event in Minneapolis, MN which used a canoe instead of a swim.  She then moved up to an Olympic distance event and finished off getting first place in her age group at her first 1/2 Ironman at a local race.  She was bit by the distance bug and signed up for her first full Ironman that next year.  Since then Katherine has vowed to complete 1 Ironman every year no matter what happens!
